Goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. This goal targets a reduction in the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030 and seeks to end epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, and combat hepatitis, water-borne diseases, and other communicable diseases.
Additionally, it aims to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by one-third through prevention, treatment, and the promotion of mental health and well-being. The goal also focuses on strengthening the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and the harmful use of alcohol.
Significant progress has been made against several leading causes of death and disease. Life expectancy has increased dramatically, infant and maternal mortality rates have declined, and significant strides have been made in combating HIV and malaria. Good health is essential to sustainable development, and the 2030 Agenda reflects the complexity and interconnectedness of these issues, taking into account economic and social inequalities, rapid urbanization, climate threats, and the continuing burden of infectious diseases.
Despite these advancements, the world is off-track to achieve the health-related SDGs. Progress has been uneven, with a 31-year gap between countries with the shortest and longest life expectancies. While some nations have made impressive gains, many people are still being left behind. Multisectoral, rights-based, and gender-sensitive approaches are essential to address inequalities and build good health for all. Universal health coverage will be integral to achieving SDG 3, ending poverty, and reducing inequalities. Emerging global health priorities, such as antimicrobial resistance, also demand urgent action.
