Gender Equality

Goal 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This goal seeks to end all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, including trafficking and sexual exploitation. It also aims to eradicate harmful practices such as child, early, and forced marriage, and female genital mutilation.

Ensuring the full participation of women in leadership and decision-making in political, economic, and public life is vital. Equal opportunities and access to resources are essential for true gender equality. Empowering women and girls is not just a fundamental human right but also crucial for a sustainable future. It has been proven that gender equality helps drive economic growth and development.

Over the past 20 years, significant progress has been made. More girls are in school now than ever before, and many regions have achieved gender parity in primary education. However, challenges persist. Despite an increasing number of women entering the labor market, large inequalities remain. Women are often denied the same work rights as men, and issues such as sexual violence, exploitation, and the unequal division of unpaid care and domestic work continue to be significant barriers.

Moreover, climate change, disasters, conflict, and migration disproportionately affect women and children. It is essential to ensure women have equal rights to land and property, access to sexual and reproductive health services, and technology. While the number of women in public office has increased, encouraging more women leaders will further promote gender equality. Achieving this goal requires a collective effort to address these disparities and empower women across all sectors of society.
