Elk river arts & lectures (eral) was founded to facilitate an ongoing lecture and reading series in livingston, montana, and surrounding rural communities. writers are brought in to read and/or lecture for the benefit of both the general public and local schoolchildren. there are several author programs each year, held either in the public schools or in a nearby conference facility. the most significant event is a workshop held in august, where several authors speak and lead workshops.

The organization purchased a surplus former school building in 1994. the rooms and spaces are rented out to other local nonprofit organizations, small business startups and artists at affordable rates.the old gymnasium has been rehabilitated for use as a home for the nonprofit blitzkieg wrestling club for children. the auditorium has been refurbished for use by the local community. land in front of the school has been converted to serve as a community garden and the nonprofit farm-to-school program. grants have been received to replace old windows with energy efficient and historically appropriate replacements.in 2021 a property management company was hired to maintain premises.

(foundation) is to manage, maintain, and support publicly-accessible recreation facilities to expand and enhance recreational opportunities and enrich the quality of life and personal wellbeing for residents of the greater livingston montana community and surrounding areas. the foundation pursues this mission by seeking and securing funds to construct a multi-sport, publicly owned community recreation facility that will be open to individuals on a user-fee basis. following construction, the foundation may thereafter manage and maintain that facility pursuant to a separate contractual arrangement with the city or another party. however, no such contractual arrangement is in place at this time.
